Three men found guilty of murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson in Mexico

Three men have been found guilty of murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad during a surfing trip to Mexico in 2024. The verdict was delivered by Judge Raúl Hernández Arellano in Ensenada, on Mexico’s Pacific coast, after a five-week trial. The brothers’ parents, Debra and Martin Robinson, attended every day of the proceedings and held hands as the judge announced his decision. The couple were due to leave for the US within hours of the verdict on Thursday afternoon local time, before returning to their home in Perth in the coming days. Jesus Gerardo, known as El Kekas, Irineo Francisco, and Angel Jesus were convicted of aggravated homicide, aggravated robbery, violent robbery and violent vehicle theft. The verdict followed six hours of closing arguments during which Debra was allowed to address the court. She urged the judge to find the three men accused of murdering her boys, Jake and Callum Robinson, guilty and impose the toughest prison sentence possible. “The day Callum and Jake were murdered our world stopped,” Robinson told the court. “Our sons were taken from us and our lives have been changed forever.” She said “nothing can undo what has happened but accountability matters”. Jake, 31, Callum, 32, and Carter disappeared in late April 2024 while camping at a remote surfing location in Baja California. Their bodies were discovered days later at the bottom of a well with gunshot wounds, alongside the body of a local farmer who had also been shot. Prosecutors alleged the trio were shot dead by the three accused who wanted to steal the tyres from their car. During the trial, the court heard the victims pleaded with their attackers to spare their lives before they were killed, with the men later mocking their pleas. The verdict brings a major development in the case that devastated the Robinson family and shocked Australians. Jake was a doctor set to start work at a Geelong hospital, while Callum was a former professional lacrosse player living in San Diego.
