SriLankan Airlines Wins Mercantile Swimming Championship for the First Time

SriLankan Airlines has secured the overall championship at the 2026 Mercantile Swimming Championship for the first time in its history, marking a significant achievement for the airline’s sporting team.

The SriLankan Airlines swimming team finished at the top of the standings with 582 points, narrowly beating John Keells Holdings, which secured second place with 575 points. MAS Holdings finished third with 469 points.

A Closely Contested Championship

The seven-point gap between SriLankan Airlines and John Keells Holdings highlighted the intensity of the competition, with both teams battling closely for the overall title.

The championship was held at the Thurston Swimming Complex in Colombo, attracting more than 550 swimmers representing 28 organisations. The event brought together participants from across the mercantile sector to compete in a range of swimming events.

A Historic Sporting Achievement

Organised jointly by the Thurston College Aquatic Club and the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU), the 2026 championship provided a competitive platform for swimmers representing organisations from different industries.

SriLankan Airlines’ overall victory reflects the team’s performance throughout the competition and adds a new milestone to the airline’s sporting achievements.

The result also underscores the growing participation of corporate teams in organised swimming, where consistency, teamwork and individual performances contribute to overall success.

For SriLankan Airlines, the historic win extends its presence beyond aviation, with its swimmers demonstrating their competitive strength in the pool and securing the championship title against a strong field of corporate teams.

The achievement marks a proud moment for the airline’s swimming team, whose combined efforts delivered the organisation’s first-ever overall victory at the Mercantile Swimming Championship.
