Sri Lankan delegation to seek appeal in Anojan death sentence case

The Sri Lankan government confirmed that a specialized five-member delegation is scheduled to depart for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to explore every feasible legal option to appeal the capital punishment sentence imposed on Sri Lankan citizen Sivarasa Anojan. The case has drawn significant public attention and diplomatic concern.

The delegation, comprising legal experts and senior foreign affairs officials, intends to work directly with the Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh and local legal representatives to lodge an appeal with Saudi judicial bodies. Officials are also examining provisions to initiate diplomatic discussions aimed at securing royal pardon or clemency.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the state maintains an active mechanism to extend legal representation and consular assistance to Sri Lankan migrant workers facing severe legal challenges overseas. Authorities noted that all diplomatic channels will be utilized to safeguard Anojan's rights under applicable international legal standards.
