Sri Lankan Community Hosts Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles at Sinan's Kitchen

The Sri Lankan-Australian community hosted The Hon Richard Marles MP, Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and Minister for Defence, at a special high-level luncheon at Sinan's Kitchen, bringing together community leaders, investors and business representatives to strengthen the enduring relationship between Australia and Sri Lanka.

The gathering was a significant moment for the Sri Lankan-Australian community, providing a unique opportunity to engage directly with senior Australian political leadership and explore practical opportunities to build stronger connections between the two nations.

The event was held at Sinan's Kitchen, owned by Sinanatha Jayathilake, a prominent member of the Sri Lankan-Australian community and investor. Approximately 15 invited VIP representatives from the Sri Lankan community, business and investment sectors participated in the luncheon.

Also participating was Lauren Kathage MP, Member for Yan Yean, representing the local Victorian community. Ms Kathage has served as the elected Member for Yan Yean since 2022.

The discussions focused on strengthening the friendship between Australia and Sri Lanka and creating new opportunities for cooperation across business, investment, tourism, education and community engagement.

Deputy Prime Minister Expresses Interest in Visiting Sri Lanka

During the luncheon, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles expressed strong interest in visiting Sri Lanka next year, subject to official arrangements.

Such a visit could create an important opportunity for engagement with Sri Lankan government leaders, business representatives, educational institutions and community organisations, while opening new avenues for cooperation between the two countries.

The Sri Lankan-Australian community warmly welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister's interest and expressed its commitment to supporting stronger Australia–Sri Lanka relations.

The luncheon also highlighted the community service and humanitarian contribution of Sinanatha Jayathilake, owner of Sinan's Kitchen.

According to information provided by the community, Mr Jayathilake recently led an initiative that raised AUD $100,000 through community fundraising, with the funds subsequently handed over to the Government of Sri Lanka.

The contribution was also referred to in the Australian parliamentary Hansard, according to the community.

The initiative reflects the ability of the Sri Lankan-Australian community to mobilise support for Sri Lanka and demonstrates the strength of humanitarian and people-to-people connections between the two nations.
