Sri Lanka to prioritize national interests in decision on Iranian vessels
· Sri Lanka
The Government of Sri Lanka affirmed that any official decisions regarding Iranian vessels currently anchored or traveling off its territorial waters will be guided strictly by national interests, international legal standards, and sovereign humanitarian considerations.
Addressing the media at a Cabinet press briefing, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa emphasized that the administration would balance diplomatic relationships while prioritizing domestic security and economic stability. The statement comes against a backdrop of heightened international scrutiny and sanctions enforcement by major Western partners concerning maritime trade involving Iran.
The minister stressed that Sri Lanka maintains long-standing bilateral relations with various global partners and adheres strictly to United Nations maritime conventions. However, the government will not bow to unilateral pressures that undermine the welfare of the country or contravene international humanitarian norms.
Maritime surveillance authorities are keeping a close watch on regional shipping lanes, and relevant state departments are assessing the cargo and navigational requests of the vessels in accordance with established port protocols and national regulatory guidelines.
