Seat Belt Rule to Apply to All Vehicles on Expressways from September 19

Sri Lanka will enforce a seat belt requirement for all vehicles travelling on expressways from September 19, as authorities move to strengthen road safety measures.

Under the new enforcement, occupants travelling in vehicles using the country’s expressway network will be required to wear seat belts while the vehicle is in motion.

The measure is aimed at reducing the risk of serious injuries and fatalities in the event of crashes on expressways, where vehicles generally travel at higher speeds.

Motorists and passengers are advised to ensure that seat belts are properly fastened before entering an expressway and throughout their journey.

Authorities are expected to step up monitoring and enforcement once the regulation comes into effect.

The move forms part of broader efforts to improve road discipline and promote safer driving practices on Sri Lanka’s expressway network.

Drivers are also reminded that observing speed limits, maintaining safe distances and following lane and other traffic regulations remain essential for preventing accidents.
