Sri Lanka Set to Establish Regional Aviation Training Centre with ICAO Support

Sri Lanka is set to strengthen its position in the global aviation sector with plans to establish a regional aviation training centre, backed by the support of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Speaking to Aviation Voice, Deputy Minister of Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku confirmed that discussions with ICAO have progressed positively following recent meetings at the organisation’s headquarters. The proposed project has already secured approval from the National Planning Department, marking a significant step forward in its development.

The Government is now working to obtain the necessary international accreditation to ensure the training centre meets globally recognised aviation standards. Once established, the facility is expected to serve as a regional hub for aviation education and professional training.

Minister Kodithuwakku highlighted that the initiative will open up greater opportunities for Sri Lankans aspiring to build careers in aviation, while also attracting international students. This, in turn, is anticipated to generate valuable foreign exchange earnings for the country.

The move comes at a time when the global aviation industry is experiencing rising demand for skilled professionals, driven by expanding airline operations and growing aircraft fleets. By investing in advanced training infrastructure, Sri Lanka aims to position itself as a key player in meeting this demand while boosting its presence in the international aviation landscape.
