Sri Lanka Police to mark 160 Years with island‑wide celebrations

The Sri Lanka Police is preparing to commemorate its 160th anniversary on September 3, 2026, with a series of programmes and events designed to strengthen public awareness and foster closer ties between the Police and the community. 

Established on September 3, 1866 during the British colonial period, the institution will mark 160 years of service this year with a grand ceremony at the Police Field Force Headquarters.

According to the Sri Lanka Police, under the direction of the Inspector General of Police, a range of activities has been organized for this year’s Police Day celebrations. 

Beginning on August 28, public awareness campaigns are being conducted through television, electronic and print media to highlight the services provided by the Police and to promote stronger cooperation with the public.

A major feature of the anniversary will be a public exhibition at the Police Field Force Headquarters from September 4 to 6, running from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm daily. 

The exhibition will focus on legal awareness and services required by the public in their day‑to‑day lives, with information stalls representing various divisions of the Police. 

Attractions for children and young people will include media demonstrations, motorcycle displays, parachute demonstrations, horse shows and police dog demonstrations. Musical concerts will also be staged from 7.00 pm to 11.00 pm on September 4, 5 and 6.

In addition, Police divisions and stations across the island have organized a wide range of community‑oriented programmes in conjunction with the anniversary. These initiatives are intended to enhance public engagement, strengthen mutual understanding and further consolidate the relationship between the Police and the people. (Newswire)
