Digital Education Initiative Launched to Bridge Learning Gaps and Improve Transparency
· Sri Lanka
Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, has emphasized the importance of data-driven policies in building an inclusive education system that provides equal opportunities for students across Sri Lanka.
She made these remarks at Temple Trees during the official launch of the first phase of the Human Resources Module under the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS), along with the pilot rollout of the e-Thaksalawa Learning Management System (LMS).
The Prime Minister noted that reliable data, effective policy frameworks, and digital support systems are essential for improving the overall quality and efficiency of education in the country.
The newly introduced NEMIS platform aims to strengthen human resource management within the education sector. It will integrate previously separate provincial and national education databases into a unified system, improving coordination and accessibility of information.
In its initial phase, the system will support teacher transfers across the Sabaragamuwa, Western, Southern, and North Western provinces. Authorities plan to gradually expand the platform nationwide, covering all teaching staff in future stages. It is also expected to improve transparency and streamline processes related to recruitment, transfers, and promotions.
Dr. Amarasuriya also highlighted that digital transformation is a key step toward delivering more transparent and efficient public services. However, she stressed that technology is meant to support teachers rather than replace them, strengthening their role in the learning process.
She further explained that the e-Thaksalawa LMS will enhance teaching and learning experiences, improve student assessments, and increase access to quality educational resources, particularly for under-resourced schools and students with special educational needs.
The initiative has been jointly implemented by the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Digital Economy, the Task Force for Digital Transformation in Education, provincial education authorities, and the Sri Lanka Air Force.
