Sri Lanka Named Among Key Trade Hubs in White House Report on Global Supply Chain Shifts

Sri Lanka has been identified in a new report by the White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy examining how global trade flows have changed following the introduction of US tariffs on Chinese goods.

Titled “The Great Transshipment Scam,” the report examines the restructuring of international supply chains since 2018 and argues that goods originating in countries facing higher tariffs, particularly China, have increasingly reached the US market through intermediary countries.

Sri Lanka is among more than 40 countries identified as part of a broader network of manufacturing, logistics and trade hubs that have gained importance as businesses diversify their production and distribution channels in response to changing global trade policies.

The report places Sri Lanka in its “Tier 3” category, which comprises smaller economies that can offer strategic advantages to international businesses. These include favourable geographic locations, logistics infrastructure, warehousing capacity, free trade zones, competitive labour costs and access to international markets.

The inclusion of Sri Lanka highlights the country’s growing relevance within evolving global supply chains and its potential role as businesses seek alternative production and distribution routes amid shifting international trade conditions.
