Sri Lanka to Introduce Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy Subject for Grade 6 in 2027
· Sri Lanka
A new subject focusing on entrepreneurship and financial literacy will be introduced for Grade 6 students in Sri Lanka from 2027 under the country’s new curriculum reforms, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has announced.
The broader reforms aim to provide students from Grades 6 to 9 with knowledge and practical understanding of entrepreneurship, financial management and responsible financial decision-making.
As the first phase, the new subject will be introduced to all Grade 6 students in 2027. The revised curriculum framework lists Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy as an essential subject within the Grade 6–9 curriculum.
The Prime Minister also highlighted initiatives such as the Stock Market Game and school capital market clubs, which are intended to give students practical exposure to entrepreneurship and investment from an early age.
She stressed that financial literacy should go beyond understanding money and investments, with strong emphasis placed on ethics and responsible financial behaviour.
Young people should understand that earning money should not involve exploiting or deceiving others, but should instead be based on responsible and ethical conduct, the Prime Minister said.
The Grade 6 reforms are scheduled to be implemented in 2027, following the government’s decision to postpone their introduction from 2026.
