Sri Lanka Enters New Surgical Era with First AI-Assisted Robotic Procedures

Sri Lanka has taken a major step forward in medical innovation with the successful completion of its first surgeries assisted by AI-enabled robotic technology. The landmark procedures were carried out at Asiri Surgical Hospital, marking a new chapter in the country’s healthcare capabilities.

The operations involved two complex procedures performed with the support of a robotic surgical system under the full control of specialist surgeons. One surgery was a hysterectomy conducted on a woman in her 50s, while the other addressed a complicated kidney-related condition. In both cases, the robotic system enhanced the surgeons’ ability to perform delicate tasks with greater precision.

Medical experts emphasised that the technology does not function independently. Instead, surgeons operate the system through a specialised console, guiding robotic arms that replicate their movements with exceptional accuracy. The integration of AI and advanced programming allows for more refined control, enabling minimally invasive procedures.

According to hospital officials, robotic-assisted surgery offers multiple benefits, including reduced blood loss, smaller incisions, lower risk of infection, and faster recovery times. The system also allows procedures to be planned and rehearsed beforehand, improving surgical outcomes and reducing potential errors.

The introduction of this advanced technology is expected to significantly enhance Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector. With more than 30 doctors set to receive specialised training in robotic surgical techniques, the country is building capacity for wider adoption of this innovation.

Experts believe this breakthrough could reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for complex treatments, particularly in areas such as cancer care. As robotic-assisted surgery expands to more hospitals, it is poised to strengthen local medical services and position Sri Lanka at the forefront of modern healthcare in the region.
