Sri Lanka Strengthens Digital Transformation Drive with UNDP Partnership

Sri Lanka is taking a significant step forward in its digital transformation journey by strengthening collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), following a high-level discussion focused on accelerating the nation’s digital future.

The meeting brought together a distinguished delegation led by United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja, along with UNDP Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, Ms. Azusa Kubota. They engaged in discussions with key representatives of the Government of Sri Lanka, including Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Mr. Eranga Weeraratne, Chief Advisor to the President on Digital Economy Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, and Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy Mr. Waruna Sri Dhanapala.

Central to the discussions was the advancement of Sri Lanka’s digital infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on developing Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to enhance service delivery, governance, and citizen engagement. The dialogue also explored opportunities to unlock new investments through financing mechanisms supported by international financial institutions (IFIs), aimed at driving sustainable digital growth.

A key highlight of the meeting was the comprehensive review of the ongoing ‘OneRegistry’ project, a collaborative initiative between UNDP and WHO Sri Lanka. The project is expected to play a crucial role in streamlining data systems and improving coordination across sectors, contributing to more efficient public services.

Reaffirming UNDP’s role as the United Nations’ lead agency for digital transformation in support of sustainable development, Ms. Wignaraja emphasized the organization’s continued commitment to Sri Lanka. She noted that UNDP will build on existing initiatives under the UN Digital Transformation Offer to further strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem.

The discussion marks another milestone in Sri Lanka’s journey toward a more inclusive, resilient, and technology-driven future, underpinned by strong international partnerships and a shared vision for sustainable development.
