Soul Sounds Returns to Lionel Wendt with “The Pop Era” Show

Sri Lanka’s acclaimed female vocal ensemble Soul Sounds is set to return to the Lionel Wendt Theatre with an exciting new production titled The Pop Era, a vibrant celebration of some of the greatest pop hits across generations. The concert, directed by internationally recognised Music Director Soundarie David Rodrigo, will take place on 12 July 2026 at 7:30 p.m., promising an evening filled with powerful vocals, nostalgic favourites and dynamic stage performances.

The Pop Era is designed as a musical journey through time, featuring reimagined versions of iconic pop songs that have defined global music culture. With Soul Sounds’ signature harmonies and innovative arrangements, the production aims to blend nostalgia with fresh artistic interpretation, appealing to audiences of all ages.

According to Soundarie David Rodrigo, the show is a tribute to the universal appeal of pop music. She noted that the concert is intended to bring people together through shared memories while showcasing the ensemble’s unique sound and creative expression.

Sri Lanka’s Award-Winning Ensemble

Soul Sounds has grown into one of Sri Lanka’s most respected choral groups, originally formed from the Holy Family Convent Senior Choir. Today, it comprises talented young women from diverse backgrounds, united by their passion for music and performance.

The ensemble is known for its versatility, performing across genres including gospel, jazz, pop, classical and contemporary choral works. Over the years, it has gained both local and international recognition for its artistic excellence.

Global Achievements and Recognition

Soul Sounds has represented Sri Lanka on prestigious global platforms, including the International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales and the World Choir Games in China and New Zealand, where it earned multiple awards, including gold medals in 2024.

The group has also performed internationally in countries such as Australia, Austria, France, India, Malaysia, South Africa, the United States and more, building a strong global reputation.

A Legacy of Memorable Productions

Known for its innovative stage shows, Soul Sounds has previously delivered successful productions such as Totally 80’s, Totally 90’s, Sounds Like Pop, All That Jazz, and Imagine. These performances have been widely praised for their creativity, musical quality and audience engagement.

The ensemble has also collaborated with leading musicians and performed alongside the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka, further strengthening its artistic legacy.

Leadership of Soundarie David Rodrigo

At the heart of Soul Sounds is Soundarie David Rodrigo, an accomplished pianist, conductor and educator. A graduate of the Royal College of Music in London, she has played a key role in elevating Sri Lanka’s presence in the international choral music scene.

Her contributions have been recognised with numerous awards, including the SAARC Woman of Achievement Award, the Zonta Award, and the Bunka Award. She also serves as an international competition juror and is widely known as a judge on Sri Lanka’s Got Talent.
