SJB to Decide Tomorrow on No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker
· Sri Lanka
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will decide tomorrow whether to bring a no-confidence motion against the Speaker of Parliament, SJB Parliamentarian Ajith P. Perera said.
Speaking at an SJB media briefing in Colombo, Perera also criticised the government’s energy policies, claiming that efforts were being made to reverse Sri Lanka’s solar energy drive.
He said solar power currently accounts for around 20% of the country’s energy supply and that the expansion of solar power had helped save diesel and coal without requiring government capital investment.
Perera said a major issue had emerged in the energy sector and expressed concern over what he described as an attempt to reverse the country’s progress in solar energy.
He also criticised the government’s efforts to combat the drug menace, saying that despite projects introduced to tackle drug abuse, substances such as heroin and ‘ice’ could still be found in towns and villages across the country.
Commenting on the Speaker, Perera said the Speaker should remain independent after being appointed, in keeping with parliamentary tradition. He alleged that the current Speaker was unsuitable and faced allegations of bias and corruption.
He said the SJB’s group meeting tomorrow would decide whether to proceed with a no-confidence motion against the Speaker.
