From Sri Lanka Roots to Global Leadership: The Extraordinary Journey of Macquarie CEO Shemara Wikramanayake

Shemara Wikramanayake’s journey from an immigrant Sri Lankan family to the leadership of one of Australia’s most influential financial institutions stands as a remarkable story of resilience, determination, and achievement.

The Macquarie Group CEO recently announced her retirement ahead of the company’s annual general meeting in Sydney, bringing an end to an eight-year tenure at the helm of the global investment giant.

Recognised as a trailblazer in Australian business, Wikramanayake broke traditional perceptions of corporate leadership as the first Asian woman to lead a major Australian publicly listed company. Her success was built not on public attention or personal branding, but on her expertise, calm leadership style, strong analytical ability, and ability to connect with people.

Described by colleagues as thoughtful, composed, and highly effective, she earned respect within the competitive world of global finance through consistent performance and a collaborative approach. Despite her historic achievements, she maintained a relatively private profile, choosing to focus on the organisation and its people rather than personal recognition.

Her path to success was shaped by a dramatic family history. The Wikramanayake family had been a prominent legal family in Colombo during the 1960s, with strong social standing and professional influence. However, political and economic changes in Sri Lanka during that period dramatically altered their circumstances.

Following political shifts and economic reforms in the 1970s, the family faced significant challenges. Her grandfather, E.G. Wikramanayake, was a respected lawyer whose legal work had drawn political attention, while her father, Ranji Wikramanayake, encountered difficulties continuing his medical career in Sri Lanka.

Seeking a new beginning, the family moved first to the United Kingdom and later migrated to Australia with limited resources. When Shemara was eight years old, her parents arrived in Sydney with only around $200, rebuilding their lives through hard work and perseverance.

That fresh start in Australia became the foundation for a remarkable family success story. The Wikramanayakes went on to establish respected careers, with Shemara eventually achieving the highest level of recognition in the financial sector.

She joined Macquarie Bank in 1987, during the early stages of the institution’s international expansion. Over the decades, she played a key role in the company’s growth, eventually becoming Chief Executive Officer in December 2018. Under her leadership, Macquarie continued to strengthen its global presence and significantly increased its market value.

At the company’s annual meeting, Wikramanayake credited her achievements to teamwork rather than individual success, reflecting the leadership style that defined her career.

As she prepares to step down from her role, her story remains an example of how perseverance, adaptability, and opportunity can transform challenges into extraordinary achievements — from a difficult migration journey to becoming one of Australia’s most influential business leaders.
