Senura Silva Makes History as First Sri Lankan to Qualify for World Table Tennis Championships
· Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan table tennis player Senura Silva has achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the 2027 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Table Tennis Championships, becoming the first Sri Lankan to secure qualification for the prestigious global event.
The 21-year-old’s achievement marks a significant moment for Sri Lankan table tennis, highlighting the potential of local athletes to compete at the highest international level.
A Journey Built on Dedication and Sacrifice
Senura’s success is the result of years of commitment, perseverance and family support. His table tennis journey began under the guidance of his parents, former national champions Indika Prasad and Deepika Rodrigo, who played a key role in developing his skills from a young age.
Educated at Ananda College, Colombo, Senura established himself on the local circuit by winning the National Championship in 2020. His progress since then has reflected both his talent and determination to pursue opportunities beyond Sri Lanka.
Currently based in the United States, Senura trains and competes internationally, including in the Major League Table Tennis tournament. His training and competition expenses have been funded entirely by his parents, without external sponsorship.
Although his commitments in the United States have previously limited some opportunities to represent Sri Lanka, he continued working towards his ambition of competing on the international stage.
Asian Championships Provide the Breakthrough
After returning to Sri Lanka following four years abroad, Senura secured an opportunity to represent the country at the Asian Table Tennis Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Despite challenges associated with changes to the Sri Lanka Table Tennis Association’s selection criteria, he earned his place in the national team and delivered an important performance at the continental competition.
Representing Sri Lanka in the men’s singles event, Senura recorded a hard-fought 3–2 victory over a player from Hong Kong during the matches determining positions 17–32. That victory proved pivotal in his journey towards qualification for the 2027 World Table Tennis Championships in Kazakhstan.
His qualification represents a major achievement for both the player and the country, opening the door to participation at one of the sport’s most prestigious international competitions.
