Rumesh Tharanga Targets 2036 Olympic Retirement

Sri Lankan javelin star Rumesh Tharanga has revealed plans to retire from competitive athletics after the 2036 Olympic Games in India.

Speaking at a public event, Tharanga said he intends to compete at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane before bringing his career to an end after the 2036 Games.

“I will participate in the 2028 Olympic Games and the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane. I intend to retire after the 2036 Olympic Games in India,” he said.

Tharanga also outlined his immediate ambition of setting a new Olympic record in the javelin throw at Los Angeles 2028.

The current Olympic record stands at 92.97 metres, set by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“I believe I can achieve an average above 90 metres in Los Angeles. My main focus is on setting an Olympic record,” Tharanga said.

The Sri Lankan javelin star is now targeting further progress on the international stage, with the 2028 Olympics emerging as a major milestone in his long-term career plans.
