Air Force Promotes Rumesh Tharanga After Historic Gold Triumph

In recognition of an extraordinary international achievement, the Sri Lanka Air Force has promoted Corporal Rumesh Tharanga to the rank of Sergeant following his historic gold medal victory in the javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games.

Tharanga’s remarkable performance, where he triumphed over world champions, marked a proud milestone for Sri Lanka on the global athletics stage. His achievement not only brought honour to the nation but also highlighted the growing strength of Sri Lankan track and field.

Acknowledging this exceptional feat, Air Force Commander Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe approved the promotion as a tribute to Tharanga’s dedication, discipline, and continued excellence in sport and service.

In addition to the promotion, a special financial award was presented to Tharanga in appreciation of his achievement. The Air Force also recognised the vital contributions of his support team, awarding his coach Tony Prasanna and physiotherapist Corporal Chandima Gurusinghe for their roles in securing the victory.

The felicitation ceremony took place at Air Force Headquarters, celebrating not just an individual triumph, but a collective effort that brought immense pride to the nation.
