Rohit Sharma: From Humble Beginnings to Record-Breaking Greatness

Rohit Sharma has carved out a remarkable legacy in world cricket, rising from modest beginnings to become one of the most destructive batsmen and successful leaders the game has seen.

Born in Nagpur and raised in Dombivli, Rohit’s early life was shaped by financial challenges. Living with his grandparents and uncle, his cricketing journey took a decisive turn when his childhood coach Dinesh Lad recognised his exceptional talent. Lad secured him a scholarship to Swami Vivekanand International School, where access to proper facilities helped refine his skills. Initially an off-spinner batting lower down the order, Rohit’s natural stroke play soon saw him promoted up the lineup—an early glimpse of his future as a top-order star.

Rohit made his international debut in 2007, shortly before playing a role in India’s triumph at the ICC T20 World Cup 2007. However, his early career was inconsistent, highlighted by the disappointment of missing out on the 2011 ODI World Cup squad. The defining moment came in 2013 when captain MS Dhoni elevated him to the opening position during the Champions Trophy. That decision transformed Rohit into a batting powerhouse.

As an opener, he redefined limited-overs batting with his ability to build innings and unleash devastating acceleration. His record-breaking 264 against Sri Lanka remains the highest individual score in One Day Internationals, and he stands alone as the only player to score three double centuries in ODIs.

Beyond individual brilliance, Rohit’s leadership has been equally impactful. As captain of the Mumbai Indians, he led the franchise to five Indian Premier League titles, earning recognition as one of the most composed and tactically sharp leaders in the game. Taking charge of the Indian national team, he introduced an aggressive and fearless playing style that yielded major success, including a run to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and victory at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.
