Railway trade unions launch 48-hour strike over several demands

Several railway trade unions launched a 48-hour trade union strike effective from midnight, pressing the government to fulfill long-pending demands concerning administrative oversight and operational logistics. The strike has raised serious concerns regarding island-wide public transit availability.

Chief among the demands tabled by the striking unions is the immediate removal of the incumbent General Manager of Railways, alongside calls to rectify long-standing salary anomalies, promotion delays, and staffing shortages across various technical grades.

While emergency discussions have been initiated between union representatives and the Ministry of Transport, travelers and daily commuters have been advised to seek alternative modes of transportation while disruptions persist over the 48-hour period.
