Railway Dept. moves to curb social media use during working hours, disclosing sensitive information

Sri Lanka Railways has issued a special circular aimed at preventing the use of social media during working hours and the disclosure of sensitive information related to railway operations.

The department said the circular was issued after observing a growing trend among certain officers and employees to disclose sensitive information through social media during working hours and on occasions related to their official duties.

According to the department, the disclosure of such sensitive information on social media could seriously undermine the credibility of the railway service, passenger safety, and institutional discipline.

Under the new circular, only the General Manager of Railways, the official spokesperson of the Railway Department, and the Information Officer are authorized to provide official information to external parties or the media.

The circular, issued under the signature of the General Manager of Railways, further states that strict legal action will be taken against officers who violate its instructions.
