Rafaela Fernando Takes Sri Lankan Talent to the World Fashion Stage
· Sri Lanka
Rafaela Fernando, one of the biggest figures in the Sri Lankan fashion and photography industry, has not had a very inspiring journey.
She studied at St. Bridget’s Convent in Colombo and faced various difficulties in school as a child due to her dyslexia. However, her innate talent for art and the unwavering support of her parents enabled her to recognize her true potential.
The first camera she received as a gift from her father at a young age was the turning point that changed her life, and today she is an internationally acclaimed fashion designer and photographer.
The most distinctive feature of Rafaela’s creations is the artistic nature that breaks away from the traditional framework.
Her photographs consistently depict a deep and emotional story. Creating a platform for this unique artistic concept, she launched the hugely popular Raffaella Fernando Celebrity Calendar (RFCC) in 2013. Through this, she was able to elevate local photography to international standards.
Overcoming the barriers faced by women in a male-dominated field, she also pioneered the creation of an all-female photography and production crew in Sri Lanka. She set a strong example of women empowerment.

Her bold creativity has put Sri Lanka on the global fashion map. Her designs have been appreciated at international platforms such as London Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week, and she has also had the opportunity to create fashion for the red carpet of the world-famous Cannes Film Festival. She won the ‘Best Fashion Photographer of the Year’ award in London in 2017.
Rafaela Fernando, who has proven that an artist with her own identity can conquer the international stage by breaking traditional barriers, is a source of great pride and an example for all Sri Lankans.
