Pursuit of allegedly stolen Porsche through Melbourne ends in head-on crash

A man has been hospitalised hours after allegedly stealing a luxury car and threatening its owner with a machete.

The owner of the white Porsche returned home in Bentleigh, in southeast Melbourne, about 9.20pm on Friday when there was a confrontation with three men.

The men allegedly threatened the owner with a machete and forced the owner to hand over the keys. One of the men allegedly drove away in the car while the others ran off.

The Porsche was allegedly spotted by numerous police units “driving in a dangerous manner and at speed” across the city’s western and southern suburbs after the alleged carjacking.

Just under five hours later, at 2.10am on Saturday, officers saw the vehicle on the Eastlink “allegedly speeding with its headlights off”.

They tried to stop the car but the driver refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit which continued through the Melba Tunnel and towards a roadworks closure on the Eastern Fwy.

The chase was called off as the driver U-turned and drove into oncoming traffic on the freeway.

The five-hour-long chase ended as the car collided with a van, trapping the driver of the allegedly stolen Porsche.

After being freed form the vehicle, the driver was rushed to hospital under police guard with serious injuries.

The driver of the van suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to hospital.

Investigations into the incidents have been launched and anyone with information, including dashcam or CCTV footage, has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
