Protest Held Outside Opposition Leader’s Office Calling for Sajith Premadasa’s Resignation
· Sri Lanka
A group identifying themselves as the Citizens of the People’s Struggle staged a protest outside the office of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, calling for his immediate resignation.
The protesters alleged that Premadasa had failed in his role as Opposition Leader and called on him to “go home” before attempting to defeat the Government.
The group accused the Opposition Leader of engaging in what it described as political deception and demanded that he step down from his position.
Chanaka Bandara, General Secretary of the Citizens of the People’s Struggle, said the organisation had presented a “charge sheet” against the Opposition Leader.
He claimed that Sri Lanka did not currently have a genuine opposition and questioned whether the Opposition Leader could be considered a leader of the people.
Bandara also criticised Premadasa over his campaign concerning the proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment, alleging that he had failed to deliver on his promises and describing him as unsuccessful in his opposition to the amendment.
He further claimed that the Opposition Leader lacked the knowledge necessary to work on behalf of the people and alleged that Premadasa had done nothing significant during his two years as Opposition Leader.
Bandara also pointed out that the Opposition Leader’s Office is maintained using public funds collected through taxation, arguing that the public therefore has the right to demand the establishment of what he described as a genuine opposition.
He called on Sajith Premadasa to immediately resign from the position of Opposition Leader and return home.
The remarks come amid heightened political activity surrounding the Opposition and the SJB's campaign against the Government. Premadasa is the current Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
