Police charge man with dangerous driving after pedestrian killed in collision with rubbish truck in Queens Park

A driver has been charged over the death of a father who was struck by a reversing council rubbish truck. An Yu, 70, was critically injured while exercising near his home in Queens Park, Perth, on September 7. He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital but sadly could not be saved.

In an update on Wednesday, more than three weeks after An Yu’s death, police said a 59-year-old man from Riverton had been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death. The accused, a City of Canning garbage truck driver, is next due to appear in Armadale Magistrates Court on November 9. Emergency services were called to Balaka Way about 8.50am to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and Volvo garbage truck.

7NEWS was told An Yu had shared a few precious final words with his wife of 35 years before he died. The father of two was known by locals to walk regularly as part of his recovery from a stroke, and residents described his death as “heartbreaking”. “It is someone that you see almost every morning, walking around, trying to look after himself,” Neslihan Terzi said. Neighbours also said rubbish trucks often reverse down the street because there are no easy places to turn around.
