Parliamentary Subcommittee reviews World Bank school modernisation project

The Parliamentary Subcommittee on Shortage of Physical Resources in Schools met recently under the chairmanship of MP Samanmali Gunasinghe to review the progress of the Ministry of Education’s World Bank assisted General Education Modernization Programme (GEM).

Ministry of Education officials briefed the committee on ongoing school development activities under the initiative. Emphasizing the need to expedite the project, the subcommittee instructed officials to submit a detailed progress report.

The committee highlighted the urgent need to address school sanitary and drinking water requirements, particularly focusing on ensuring drinking water quality and safety. Additionally, members conducted an extensive review of initiatives aimed at providing telecommunication facilities to schools and establishing model primary schools. (Newswire)
