One dead, two injured in fire at Soysapura flats in Moratuwa

A devastating fire swept through a residential apartment at the Soysapura housing scheme in Moratuwa on Wednesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and two others injured. The victim succumbed to burn injuries and asphyxiation inside the residence before emergency medical services arrived.

Two other occupants caught in the blaze suffered burn wounds and smoke inhalation injuries and were swiftly transported to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila for urgent medical treatment. Hospital sources reported that both victims are currently receiving specialized care in stable condition.

Firefighters from the Moratuwa Municipal Council and the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Fire Service Department responded to distress calls and prevented the inferno from spreading across the multi-story residential block. Residents from adjoining apartments were evacuated as a precautionary measure during the operation.

Moratuwa Police have initiated an inquest and a technical inquiry in coordination with the Government Analyst's Department to ascertain the exact cause of the ignition, which initial findings suggest may have started in a domestic kitchen area.
