Omo and Aldi dominate Choice list for best laundry detergent

Laundry detergents from Omo and Aldi have dominated in a new round of lab tests from consumer group Choice.

In another key finding for laundry lovers, the tests showed powder detergents typically perform better than liquids or capsules.

For front loader machines, powders from Omo and Aldi tied for first place, both scoring 82 per cent for performance.

The real difference is price, with Omo Ultimate ($1.16 per wash) and Omo Active Clean (71c per wash) much more expensive than Aldi Trimat, which cost 44c per load and performed just as well.

For top loaders, powders also proved supreme, with Aldi Trimate (66 per cent) and Omo Ultimate (62 per cent) again topping the tests.

Choice says the lower scores for top loaders reflect the fact those machines use more water, making detergents more dilute and less powerful.

For increasingly popular laundry capsules, Omo was crowned king (76 per cent), followed by Dynamo (74 per cent) and Cold Power (71 per cent).

The tests ranked the performance of 40 laundry products against a variety of stains.

While some lines performed well, others didn’t. In its top loader tests, Choice scored a liquid detergent from Earthwise at just 47 per cent, only marginally higher than washing with water alone (43 per cent).
