New York-Based Sri Lankan Indian Artist Abiraahmi Releases Debut Electronic Project ‘KAPALI’

New York-based Sri Lankan Indian artist and researcher Abiraahmi has released KAPALI, her first self-produced electronic music project, inspired by Chennai’s iconic Sri Kapaleeswara Temple.

Blending Sanskrit, Tamil and English vocals with contemporary electronic production, KAPALI explores themes of grief, memory, identity and transformation. The project draws from Abiraahmi’s personal and cultural connections while reimagining traditional influences through a modern electronic soundscape.

Inspired by the spiritual and cultural presence of the Sri Kapaleeswara Temple in Chennai, KAPALI brings together elements of heritage, ritual and contemporary music. Through its multilingual vocals and experimental production, the project reflects on how memory and identity evolve across places, generations and experiences.

As her first self-produced electronic release, KAPALI marks a significant step in Abiraahmi’s artistic journey, combining her interests in research, culture and music to create a deeply personal body of work.

The project offers listeners an immersive exploration of loss, remembrance and renewal, while creating a dialogue between South Asian cultural traditions and contemporary electronic music.
