New Chinese Ambassador Meets Sri Lanka’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports

Sri Lanka’s new Chinese Ambassador, Wei Huaxiang, met with Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage today (28) to discuss strengthening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and China.

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, where discussions focused on further strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of youth development, youth exchange programmes and sports.

The two sides also discussed expanding cooperation in these areas to create new opportunities for Sri Lankan youth.

Ambassador Wei Huaxiang said that China could provide two additional dragon boats to Sri Lanka next year.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of continued cooperation to develop the skills of Sri Lanka’s younger generation, provide them with international experiences and strengthen relationships between the youth of the two countries.

Ambassador Wei Huaxiang began his duties as China’s new Ambassador to Sri Lanka in August 2026.

Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Dinidu Saman Hennayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Aruna Bandara, and officials from the Chinese Embassy were also present at the meeting.
