Nepal-Tibet flash floods: 90 Americans, 100 Chinese nationals among 3,000 missing

Nearly 3,000 people were still missing Saturday and 633 confirmed dead after flash floods and landslides hit the Nepal-Tibet border.

Nepal's disaster agency on Saturday increased the total number of people missing on its side of the border to 2,426.

The total number of missing in Tibet is now at 554, with seven people confirmed dead, China's Xinhua news agency reported early Saturday.

Nepal's disaster agency on Friday said that 517 foreigners — which could include tourists as well as foreign workers — were still missing.

Nepal's disaster agency said Saturday that at least 626 people had been killed, bringing the total to at least 633.

The Nepal Tourism Board figures Friday said 149 Nepali tourists were among the 622 it listed as missing.

It was not immediately clear how many Nepali residents of the area were unaccounted for, but the figure is believed to be in the hundreds. 

China's foreign ministry said Thursday that nearly 100 Chinese nationals were among the missing in Nepal.

That was in addition to the 554 still missing on the Chinese side of the border, the state news agency Xinhua reported Saturday.

Nepal's new tourism board figures Friday showed 98 people from India were missing, but 85 others rescued.

Ninety US citizens were missing, the State Department said Thursday, adding that three had been rescued and it was not aware of any US fatalities. 

Ukraine's embassy in Nepal said Friday it was aware of 62 of its citizens with whom contact had been lost, revising its earlier numbers upwards by six.

"Unfortunately the number has risen to 41 overnight, Australians that are unaccounted for," Matt Thistlethwaite, assistant immigration minister said on Saturday. 

Thirty-three people from the United Kingdom were missing, the Nepal Tourism Board figures showed Friday.
