National High Performance Centre Planned to Boost Sri Lankan Athletes’ Performance

Sports associations and federations were briefed today on the proposed National High Performance Centre, which is expected to support the development of Sri Lankan athletes through scientific and sports-technology-based training methods.
The awareness programme was held at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports under the patronage of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage.
During the programme, representatives of sports associations were briefed on the country’s target of securing medals at the 2028 Olympic Games and on plans to enhance athletes’ skills and performance through scientific approaches and modern sports technology.
The ministry also outlined a programme to be implemented based on 12 key principles.
A new digital information system was introduced to sports associations to collect the information and data required for analysis and the preparation of performance reports.
Speaking at the event, Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said the Government’s objective was to study high-performance centres operating in different countries and establish a centre where athletes could undergo training using modern technological methods.
The Minister also thanked all those providing their voluntary contribution towards the establishment of the proposed centre.
Ministry Secretary Aruna Bandara, Director General of Sports S. Achchudan, National Sports Council Chairman Priyantha Ekanayake, members of the technical team providing assistance for the development of the High Performance Centre, representatives of sports associations and ministry officials also attended the programme.
