Minor flooding possible in low-lying areas of Attanagalu Oya & Kalu Ganga – Irrigation Dept.
· Sri Lanka
The Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Irrigation Department has alerted residents situated along the riverbanks of the Attanagalu Oya and Kalu Ganga regarding potential minor flood situations. The alert comes amid widespread rains battering the upper catchments across the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces.
Engineers monitoring the river gauging stations reported that water levels have reached alert thresholds in several sensitive catchment pockets. Continued precipitation could result in water spilling into low-lying agricultural lands, access roads, and vulnerable settlements in the basin areas.
Residents residing in flood-prone divisional secretariats along the basins have been requested to monitor river levels closely and prepare precautions to safeguard property and livestock. Motorists traveling along roads adjacent to these river channels are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Regional disaster management teams have been placed on standby with rescue boats and essential emergency relief equipment ready to assist communities if upstream rainfall intensifies over the next 24 hours.
