Matthew Abeysinghe: The Swimmer Who Took Sri Lanka to New Heights

From a young boy learning to swim in the United States to a record-breaking South Asian Games champion and two-time Olympian, Matthew Abeysinghe has become one of the most celebrated swimmers in Sri Lankan sporting history.

Born on 19 March 1996 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, USA, Matthew Abeysinghe grew up with strong Sri Lankan roots and developed a passion for swimming at an early age. What initially began as a way to learn water safety soon evolved into a remarkable sporting career that would see him make history for Sri Lanka.

Swimming was a family affair for Matthew. His father, Manoj Abeysinghe, was an accomplished swimming coach who played a major role in developing his son’s talent. Alongside his brothers, who also competed at national level, Matthew trained extensively and gradually established himself as one of Sri Lanka’s brightest swimming prospects.

His breakthrough on the international stage came at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati, India. Matthew produced a phenomenal performance, winning seven gold medals and surpassing the previous record held by Sri Lankan swimming great Julian Bolling.

The achievement made Matthew the athlete with the most gold medals won at a single edition of the South Asian Games, regardless of sport, marking one of the greatest individual performances by a Sri Lankan athlete at the regional event.

Four years later, he once again demonstrated his dominance at the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu, Nepal, collecting another seven gold medals.

Across his South Asian Games career, Matthew accumulated an impressive 14 gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal, establishing himself as one of the most successful athletes in the history of the Games.

His achievements were not limited to the regional arena. Matthew represented Sri Lanka at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, competing against the world's best swimmers and carrying the Sri Lankan colours onto the sport's biggest stage.

Throughout his career, he has also rewritten numerous Sri Lankan national records across freestyle, butterfly and individual medley events. Among his notable milestones was becoming the first Sri Lankan swimmer to break the 50-second barrier in the 100-metre freestyle, further raising the benchmark for the sport in the country.

His remarkable performances earned him several prestigious honours, including the Sportsman of the Year award at the Presidential Sports Awards and the Ada Derana Sri Lankan of the Year award for Sports in 2016.

Yet Matthew Abeysinghe’s legacy extends beyond medals and records. His journey reflects the importance of discipline, family support, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

From a young boy discovering the joy of swimming to an Olympic athlete and South Asian Games record-setter, Matthew has inspired countless young Sri Lankans to dream bigger and pursue sporting excellence.

Matthew Abeysinghe remains a symbol of Sri Lankan swimming’s rise on the international stage — a reminder that talent, dedication and determination can allow athletes from a small island nation to compete and succeed among the world's best.
