Madhuni Alahakoon: Bringing Stories to Life Through the Lens

With more than a decade of experience in cinematography and filmmaking, Madhuni Alahakoon has built a diverse career spanning Sri Lanka, Lebanon, the UAE and the UK. Working across cinematography, directing, producing, line production and editing, she has developed a distinctive career focused on visual storytelling and creative production.

Madhuni entered the industry in 2013, beginning her professional journey as a Trainee Editor at The Video Team (Pvt) Ltd and later working as a Junior Producer at Film Island Sri Lanka, a production company involved in international productions filmed in Sri Lanka.

Her passion for cinematography soon took her behind the camera. She worked as a freelance cinematographer and assistant cinematographer, including working alongside leading Sri Lankan Director of Photography Dhanushka Gunathilake. She later expanded her international experience through professional training and production work in Lebanon, where she worked as a Camera Assistant at Cinequipped.

Over the years, Madhuni has gained experience with a wide range of professional cinema cameras, including the ARRI Alexa series, Alexa XT and Alexa Mini, RED Dragon, RED Helium, RED Monster and RED Weapon, as well as Sony, Blackmagic and Canon systems.

Her technical expertise extends beyond camera operation. She has experience with camera rigs, Ronin systems, Easy Rig, Steadicam operation, lighting and grip work, allowing her to approach productions with an understanding of the complete visual production process.

In 2019, Madhuni took another significant step in her career by becoming Owner, Co-Founder, Director, Producer and Director of Photography at Thrii Productions, a role she held until 2022. The experience gave her the opportunity to combine her creative and production skills while developing projects from both behind and in front of the production process.

Alongside her cinematography career, Madhuni has worked as a freelance director since 2018, directing music videos and other video productions. Her work reflects her interest in creating visually engaging content while translating creative concepts into compelling screen experiences.

Her international exposure across several production markets has further broadened her understanding of filmmaking and visual communication. From commercial productions to artistic cinematography and documentary work, she has continued to develop her craft through hands-on experience.

Madhuni describes herself as a collaborative filmmaker who enjoys transforming a director’s vision into strong visual narratives. Her strengths include lighting, camera techniques, composition and creative shot design, combined with the patience and adaptability required to work effectively with different production teams.

With more than 10 years of experience behind the camera, Madhuni Alahakoon continues to build her career as a cinematographer, director and producer, bringing together technical knowledge, international exposure and a passion for visual storytelling.
