Low-Pressure System to Intensify; Rainy Weather Expected to Continue Across Sri Lanka

The low-pressure area that has formed over the Andaman Sea region of the Bay of Bengal, northeast of the island, is expected to intensify further over the next few days.

Although this system is not expected to affect Sri Lanka directly, the prevailing rainy conditions in the southwestern part of the island are expected to continue due to winds flowing towards the system.

Showers or thundershowers may occur intermittently in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts. Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm may occur in some areas.

A few spells of rain may also occur in the North Central Province and the Mannar District.

In the Uva Province and the Batticaloa and Ampara districts, showers or thundershowers may occur after 2:00 p.m.

This rainy weather is expected to continue until around September 25.

Moderately strong winds, with speeds of approximately 30–40 km/h, may occur intermittently over the western slopes of the central hills, the North Central and North Western provinces, and the Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Matale districts.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimise risks associated with lightning and temporary strong winds during thundershowers.

The highest rainfall recorded up to 8:00 a.m. was reported from the Kegalle and Ratnapura areas. Rain was also reported in the Galle and Matara regions, with further rainfall expected in these areas.

Those engaged in fishing activities in the deep-sea areas of the Bay of Bengal are urged to move to safe areas immediately.

Sea areas close to the coast may also become rough at times.
