Kumar Sangakkara: From Cricket Legend to Visionary Entrepreneur Building a Global Legacy

Born in Matale and shaped by the values of Trinity College Kandy, Kumar Sangakkara has carved a legacy that extends far beyond the cricket field. From a gifted young batsman to one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Sangakkara’s journey reflects excellence, leadership, and an unwavering pursuit of success.

With more than 28,000 international runs and a record-breaking 624-run Test partnership, Sangakkara’s elegant left-handed batting and exceptional cricketing intelligence earned him worldwide admiration. His remarkable achievement of scoring four consecutive centuries during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup remains one of the most memorable individual performances in tournament history.

Beyond his statistics, Sangakkara became admired for his character and leadership. His celebrated 2011 Marylebone Cricket Club Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture showcased his thoughtful views on the game, sportsmanship, and the role of cricket in society. His leadership qualities were further recognized when he became the first non-British President of the MCC, a historic milestone in the club’s long history.

After cricket, Sangakkara successfully transitioned his strategic mindset and discipline into the world of business. Rather than simply endorsing brands, he has built and guided a diverse portfolio of ventures across hospitality, technology, social enterprise, and real estate.

In hospitality, Sangakkara co-founded Ministry of Crab alongside former teammate Mahela Jayawardena and renowned chef Dharshan Munidasa. The restaurant evolved from a Sri Lankan concept into an internationally recognized fine dining brand, expanding its presence to global destinations including Mumbai, Shanghai, Melbourne, and the Maldives.

His entrepreneurial interests also extend into technology, where he co-founded Behaviol, an e-sports venture focused on combining artificial intelligence and Web3 technologies with virtual cricket experiences. The company successfully secured seed funding to develop its innovative platform.

Sangakkara’s business vision is also connected to social impact. Through his involvement with Taprobane Seafood Group, he has supported initiatives that create opportunities and livelihoods for communities in northern Sri Lanka. His expertise continues to be valued at the corporate level through roles such as Independent Non-Executive Director at Tokyo Cement Group and his partnership with RE/MAX Sri Lanka in the real estate sector.

By mentoring and supporting emerging ventures through platforms such as Hatch, Sangakkara continues to inspire entrepreneurs and young professionals. His journey demonstrates that the discipline, strategic thinking, and determination that made him a cricketing great can also drive success across multiple industries.

Kumar Sangakkara’s story is one of transformation—from sporting excellence to entrepreneurial leadership—proving that true greatness extends far beyond the boundaries of the cricket field.
