The Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) has decided to introduce a six-month certificate programme in Care Science to promote scientific caregiving and improve the quality of care available to the elderly, children and the general public.
The university Senate unanimously approved an emergency resolution to conduct the programme, at the ninth meeting of the second Senate held at the university’s Senate Hall on Saturday.
Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal, who presided over the meeting, said the programme would provide structured, science-based training in geriatric care, childcare and general caregiving. It is also intended to equip unemployed persons with practical skills and help them access employment opportunities in the caregiving sector.
The programme will focus on imparting the knowledge and practical skills required to care for the elderly, children and others who need assistance. By directly conducting the certificate course, the university aims to expand the availability of trained caregivers and promote safer, more systematic and quality care in households and the wider community.
During the question hour, university authorities responded to queries raised by Senate members on anti-drug initiatives among students, academic matters, hostel facilities and examination procedures. Various other issues relating to the functioning of the university were also discussed.
