Kerala on high alert after suspected Nipah case in Kozhikode.
· India
A man from Kozhikode district has been admitted to a government medical college hospital after a suspected Nipah virus infection, prompting health authorities in Kerala to place his home and workplace under containment measures. Officials have also begun contact tracing and isolation efforts to prevent any possible spread.
Samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for confirmatory testing, while no additional cases have been reported so far.
Nipah virus, which is transmitted through fruit bats, has previously affected Kerala, including the severe 2018 outbreak in Kozhikode that resulted in 17 deaths out of 18 confirmed cases. Health authorities continue to urge the public to maintain strict hygiene, including regular handwashing and avoiding contact with bat-inhabited areas, as the virus is known to have a high fatality rate of 40–75%.
