Kasturi Chellaraja Wilson: From National Athlete to Sri Lanka’s Corporate Leadership Pioneer

Kasturi Chellaraja Wilson is a remarkable Sri Lankan whose journey spans elite sport, education, motherhood and corporate leadership. Born in Colombo on January 7, 1969, she has built a distinguished career that took her from the basketball and netball courts to the highest levels of Sri Lankan business.

Her journey began at Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya, where she developed a passion for sport. She went on to represent Sri Lanka in both netball and basketball, becoming a dual-sport national athlete. In 1989, she captained the Sri Lankan National Basketball Team, adding another milestone to an already impressive sporting career.

Her achievements in netball were equally notable. She was part of Sri Lankan teams that won gold at the Asian Netball Championships in 1989, 1997 and 2001, as well as silver in 1987 and bronze in 1993.

Alongside her sporting career, Wilson developed a strong foundation in finance and management. She became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and later completed the Executive Leadership Programme at Harvard Business School.

Her professional career began in 1988 as an audit trainee at Someswaran Jayewickreme and Company, now associated with Deloitte. She subsequently moved through senior positions across auditing, finance, transportation, aviation, logistics and healthcare.

In 2002, she joined Hemas Holdings as Director of Finance at HemTours. Over the years, she took on increasingly significant leadership responsibilities across the Hemas Group, including roles connected to transportation, aviation, logistics and maritime services.

In 2016, she was appointed Managing Director of Hemas Pharmaceuticals, Hemas Surgicals and Hemas Diagnostics.

Four years later, Wilson reached a historic milestone when she became Group CEO of Hemas Holdings PLC, making her the first female Group CEO of a publicly quoted conglomerate in Sri Lanka.

Her influence has extended well beyond her executive responsibilities. She has served as a non-executive director at National Development Bank and Capital Alliance Holdings and has contributed to the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and organisations involved in management, healthcare, entrepreneurship and sport.

She also made history in the pharmaceutical industry as the first woman elected President of the Sri Lanka Chamber of the Pharmaceutical Industry, later serving as its immediate past president. Her professional contributions have also included involvement with initiatives connected to the World Bank and the UNICEF Sri Lanka Business Council.

Behind her professional achievements lies a deeply personal story of resilience. Wilson became a single mother at the age of 29 and faced the challenge of raising two children while building her career. Despite the pressures, she continued to pursue her ambitions and developed a leadership career that would inspire many others.

Her achievements have been recognised through numerous awards and honours. She was named among Sri Lanka’s Top Women Change Makers in 2019, received the Career Role Model Award in 2013 and the Women Super Achiever Award in 2016. She was also recognised among Sri Lanka’s impactful Wise Women and was named Business Leader of the Year at the SAP Dare to Dream Awards in 2023.

Kasturi Chellaraja Wilson’s story is ultimately one of determination, resilience and transformation. From a national athlete and basketball captain to an accomplished finance professional, mother and pioneering female corporate leader, she has demonstrated that achievement can transcend traditional boundaries.
