Javelin Fiesta National Talent Hunt Begins in Central Province to Discover Sri Lanka’s Future Champions
· Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s ambition to produce world-class javelin throwers has received a major boost with the launch of the “Javelin Fiesta” National Talent Identification Programme, a nationwide initiative aimed at discovering and developing future athletic stars.
The first phase of the programme will commence on July 31 in the Central Province, focusing on identifying talented athletes and creating a structured pathway towards national and international success in javelin throw.
The initiative is jointly organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Sri Lanka and the Department of Sports Development Sri Lanka. A special media briefing was held under the patronage of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage to outline the objectives and implementation plans of the programme.
During the event, a financial assistance cheque worth LKR 2.5 million was presented to Sri Lankan international javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga, who serves as the Brand Ambassador of the initiative. The grant will support his future training programmes and athletic development.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Sports Sugath Thilakarathne, Director General of Sports Development S. Achchudan, Deputy Director General of Sports Development officials, Event Coordinator and former javelin thrower Harshana Kinsley, along with senior ministry representatives.
Identifying and Developing Future Talent
The main objective of the “Javelin Fiesta” programme is to scientifically identify, train, and guide promising athletes from schools, sports clubs, sports schools, and open applications towards Sri Lanka’s national athletics pool.
The talent search will cover eight categories:
Under-16 Boys and Girls
Under-18 Boys and Girls
Under-20 Men and Women
Open Men and Women
Athletes will be selected through a combination of physical literacy assessments and event-specific javelin tests. Four athletes from each category will be selected through physical assessments, while another four will be chosen through javelin performance tests.
A total of eight athletes per category will be selected, creating a 64-member Central Province Javelin Squad.
Following the provincial-level selection, the programme will expand across the island, creating a national talent pipeline supported by specialised training camps, scientific coaching methods, and long-term athlete development plans.
With Sri Lanka aiming to strengthen its presence in international athletics, the “Javelin Fiesta” programme is expected to play a key role in discovering the next generation of medal-winning athletes and building a stronger future for the sport.
