India-Sri Lanka Housing Project: 51 new houses to be built in Badulla

The construction of 51 new homes dedicated to plantation families in the Alagolla Estate, located in the Uva Paranagama Divisional Secretariat Division of the Badulla District, commenced on Tuesday following an official foundation stone-laying ceremony. The project forms part of the ongoing multi-phase India-Sri Lanka Housing Project supported by Indian grant assistance.

The event was attended by local administrative officials, community leaders, and representatives from the High Commission of India. Beneficiary families expressed deep appreciation for the initiative, which will replace outdated line-room quarters with modern, self-contained residential units designed to improve overall quality of life and sanitation.

Addressing the gathering, officials remarked that the housing initiative demonstrates India's sustained commitment to socio-economic development and community empowerment across Sri Lanka's estate sector. In addition to residential units, associated basic infrastructure such as road connectivity, clean water access, and electricity networks are being developed alongside the housing plots.

The India-Sri Lanka Housing Project remains one of the largest grant-funded housing initiatives in the island nation, having already constructed tens of thousands of homes across Northern, Eastern, and plantation regions to date.
