IMF delegation concludes visit to Sri Lanka, discussions on seventh review to continue
· Sri Lanka
An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission team led by Evan Papageorgiou concluded its official visit to Sri Lanka on September 23, 2026, after engaging in consultations that commenced on September 10. The mission focused on assessing the country's recent macroeconomic performance and examining the ongoing implementation of structural, fiscal, and governance reforms under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement.
During their stay in Colombo, the IMF delegates held constructive discussions with senior Sri Lankan government officials, Central Bank representatives, treasury leadership, and key political stakeholders. The discussions reviewed revenue mobilization measures, debt restructuring progress, state-owned enterprise reforms, and steps taken toward fortifying the nation's social safety net amid ongoing global economic volatility.
The delegation recognized the continued stabilization of key macroeconomic indicators, including foreign exchange reserve accumulation and sustained disinflation trends. However, the mission underscored the necessity of maintaining reform momentum to insulate the vulnerable economy against external shocks and to ensure long-term debt sustainability.
The IMF team confirmed that discussions with the Sri Lankan authorities will continue virtually in the coming weeks. Both parties are working to resolve pending policy targets required to reach a staff-level agreement on the seventh review of the multi-billion-dollar bailout program.
