Boramy: Giant Cambodian Stingray Sets World Record

A female giant freshwater stingray caught in Cambodia’s Mekong River has been recognised as one of the largest freshwater fish ever recorded.

Named Boramy, the enormous stingray was caught in June 2022 and weighed approximately 300 kilograms, measuring nearly four metres from its snout to the tip of its tail.

After being carefully measured, Boramy was fitted with a tracking device to help researchers monitor her movements and was safely released back into the Mekong River.

The record-breaking catch highlighted the remarkable size and ecological importance of the Mekong’s giant freshwater species, while also providing scientists with valuable information through the tracking programme.

Boramy’s extraordinary measurements have been recognised by Guinness World Records, adding another remarkable chapter to the story of the Mekong River and its unique wildlife.
