Foundation stone laid for 51 Indian funded estate houses in Badulla

The foundation stone for 51 new housing units was laid at the Alagolla Estate in the Badulla District on September 29, 2026, by the Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy, Saranya V. S., alongside Sri Lanka’s Plantation and Community Infrastructure Minister K.V. Samantha Vidyaratna and Deputy Minister Pradeep Sundaralingam.

The housing units are being constructed under Stage 2 of IHP Phase IV, which was launched in October 2025 by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Phase IV targets the construction of 10,000 houses for the plantation community across six provinces in Sri Lanka.

The Indian Housing Project is a flagship development initiative of the Government of India in Sri Lanka, providing grant assistance of more than INR 18 billion for the construction of around 60,000 houses.

India’s ongoing development assistance in Sri Lanka’s plantation regions extends beyond housing to include the construction of a multi-specialty hospital in Dickoya, the setup of smart classrooms, the upgrading of nine plantation schools, and support for the development of the Seetha Eliya Temple.

Additionally, a multi-sectoral package of INR 750 million was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2023 to mark 200 years since the arrival of the Indian-origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka.

The foundation laying ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure, representatives of the Plantation Human Development Trust, and local beneficiaries from the Alagolla Estate. (Newswire)
