Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar Injured in Mid-Air Attack, Helps Save 174 Lives

Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot commanding flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, has been hailed for his actions after a violent confrontation with his co-pilot during the flight on September 30. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was carrying 174 passengers when the incident occurred.

According to preliminary reports, the co-pilot attacked Machchhar inside the cockpit, leaving the captain seriously injured as the aircraft rapidly lost altitude. The plane reportedly descended by around 14,000 feet in a short period during the struggle.

Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to reach the mechanism that unlocked the cockpit door. Passengers and crew then entered the cockpit and helped overpower the attacker, while additional pilots who were travelling on the flight took control of the aircraft.

The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Machchhar underwent surgery after the incident and was reported to be in stable condition. The remaining passengers later continued their journey on a replacement aircraft.

A dentist travelling on the flight, identified as Shota Musaev, reportedly provided first aid to the injured captain and helped control his bleeding before the aircraft landed.

Machchhar, 39, is an Indian national from Mumbai and lives in Dubai with his family. He previously spent around 11 years with Indian airline SpiceJet before joining flydubai in 2022, and has extensive experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have publicly praised Machchhar and the passengers and crew involved in bringing the situation under control.

Investigations by authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Israel are continuing to establish the circumstances and motive behind the cockpit attack. Officials have cautioned that the investigation remains ongoing and that several details have yet to be established
