Falcon E Racing: University of Moratuwa Students Take Sri Lankan Engineering to the Global Stage

32 students from the University of Moratuwa are taking Sri Lankan engineering to the global motorsport arena with the country’s first Formula Student electric race car.

Falcon E Racing, a student-led engineering team from the University of Moratuwa, is set to represent Sri Lanka at Formula Student Spain 2026, taking place at the iconic Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Barcelona.

The team’s journey marks an important milestone for Sri Lankan university engineering, combining electric vehicle technology, motorsport, innovation and practical engineering experience on an international platform.

Falcon E Racing has already gained valuable international exposure through competitions including Formula Student Germany, Virtual Formula Student Bharat and Formula Bharat 2024. At Formula Bharat 2024, the team achieved a top-10 finish, demonstrating the competitiveness and potential of Sri Lankan student engineers.

Behind the race car is a team of 32 students who have worked across multiple disciplines to design and develop the vehicle. Their project goes beyond building a racing machine—it provides students with hands-on experience in areas such as vehicle engineering, electric powertrains, aerodynamics, electronics, software, manufacturing and project management.

Taking the car from Sri Lanka to Spain presents another major challenge.

Advantis is supporting Falcon E Racing as its logistics partner and Platinum Sponsor, helping manage the complex transportation requirements involved in moving the specialised race car to Europe. Its support includes cargo movement, customs coordination, transportation and delivery to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

For the students, the journey itself reflects the realities of modern engineering: designing an advanced vehicle is only one part of the challenge. Manufacturing, testing, international logistics and preparing the car for competition are equally important.

From its development in Sri Lanka to the racetrack in Barcelona, Falcon E Racing represents a new generation of Sri Lankan engineering talent determined to compete beyond the country’s borders.
