ETC users get 10% toll discount on Katunayake Expressway

The Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development has rolled out new initiatives to boost the adoption of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system along the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway, aiming to make toll payments quicker and more efficient for motorists.

As part of the effort, awareness programmes highlighting the upgraded ETC services were conducted on June 15. Authorities noted that drivers now have multiple payment options, including cash, bank cards, and the ETC system. Dedicated entry and exit lanes for ETC users have also been introduced to reduce congestion and improve overall traffic movement.

To encourage greater usage, the Ministry confirmed that motorists using the ETC system will receive a 10 percent discount on toll fees for every trip.

Currently, ETC facilities are available at key interchanges such as Peliyagoda, Kerawalapitiya, Ja-Ela, and Katunayake. Plans are in place to expand the service to the Kadawatha interchange, providing access for vehicles traveling via the Outer Circular Highway.

Officials acknowledged that the previous registration process for ETC was inconvenient, often requiring visits to multiple locations. To address this, the Road Development Authority (RDA), together with the Ministry, has introduced an online registration system through its official portal, enabling users to sign up more easily from anywhere.

Once registered, motorists can collect an RFID tag from designated interchanges and top up their accounts online or via GovPay using bank cards. The system automatically deducts toll charges, allowing for seamless travel through expressway checkpoints.

The RDA also reminded ETC users to maintain a speed of 15 km/h when passing through toll gates and keep a safe distance of at least 20 metres from the vehicle ahead to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operation.
