· Sri Lanka
The Engineering Student Action Committee has raised four major issues affecting engineering faculties at universities across Sri Lanka with the Ministry of Higher Education.
Speaking to the media, Ihan Gamage, Convenor of the Engineering Student Action Committee, said the discussion had been requested to address four fundamental issues affecting the country’s six university engineering faculties.
According to Gamage, discussions were held with Deputy Minister of Higher Education Madhura Seneviratne regarding the shortage of lecturers and professors, problems relating to laboratory facilities, the failure to update curricula, and issues concerning accreditation and standards.
Senior officials of the University Grants Commission (UGC) also participated in the discussion.
Following the meeting, the student representatives told the media that they had received a positive response regarding the shortage of academic staff. However, they alleged that satisfactory or clear responses had not been provided regarding the other three issues.
The Engineering Student Action Committee said the four areas discussed were considered important to maintaining and improving the quality of engineering education in Sri Lanka.
